Does Sun Lotion prevent Vitamin D production?Updated 2 hours ago
Sunlight does not contain Vitamin D – this is manufactured in the skin as a result of UV exposure. As sun screens reduce the amount of UV rays reaching the surface of the skin, they will automatically reduce the amount of Vitamin D that will be produced.
Having said that, our bodies do not need prolonged exposure to sunlight to produce sufficient Vitamin D. To ensure adequate production of Vitamin D, most experts now recommend 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure to the face, arms and lower legs 2 or 3 times a week. It does not have to be strong sunlight, and we would always advise using a sun lotion in hot climates and when sunlight is strongest between 11:00 and 15:00.
